The NHS was established on 5 July 1948
The negotiation of a contract for GPs to enter it was accompanied by threats to retire, resign, resign from the BMA and predictions of doom, but in the end an accommodation was reached and things, on the whole, probably got better. (See also: GP Contract 1960, 1990, 2004, 2006)
The White Paper on it had been published in 1944
