In man there are four definite pharmacological subtypes and five genetic subtypes of muscarinic receptor
- M1
- M2
- M3
- M4
- M5
Nicotinic receptors (NAChR) are even more complicated as members of a gene family of ligand-gated ion channels. They are composed of pentamer subunits. There are three main subtypes
- Skeletal muscle
- Neuronal made up of combinations of α2, α4, α6, β2 or β4 and, more rarely, α5 and α3 subunits
- Neuronal made up of combinations of α7, α8 or α9 subunits
