A seafood toxicity syndrome associated with shellfish caused by the diatom Nitzchia pungens with the distinctive symptom of permament short-term memory loss, The toxin is Domoic acid. Onset is within a day with

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea and abdominal cramps
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Delerium

The neurological onset tends to be within 48 hours. If severe toxicity

  • Seizures
  • Profuse secretions
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Paralysis (can be focal)
  • Coma
  • Death
