It has an important role in maintaining homeostasis. Important functions include the maintenance of blood pressure and many organs have some autonomic innervation to regulate their activities. Autonomic neuropathy, such as occurs in diabetes mellitus leads to a loss of this control with the most prominent symptom being orthostatic hypotension.
