Introduction

Azithromycin is an antibiotic of the macrolide class.

Cautions and Interactions

There is a small increase in cardiovascular deaths, and in the risk of death from any cause. It may share this with other macrolide antibiotics.

  • Absolute risk is 47 additional cardiovascular deaths per 1 million courses with patients in the highest decile of risk for cardiovascular disease additional 245 cardiovascular deaths per 1 million courses[1].

Pharmacology

Long half-life (in the order of 60-70 hours) so single-dose may be effective for certain conditions.
