Michael Balint (1890-1970). A Hungarian physician and psychoanalyst in London. Many members of the RCGP go into rhapsody over his book, "The Doctor, his Patient, and the Illness 1957."

To study and improve the doctor patient relationship Michael and his wife Enid, also an analyst, set up Balint Groups, which continue.

The Balint flash is when, possibly after a long time, and likely without seeking it, a sudden moment of understanding illuminates the doctor-patient relationship.

With luck, it is a genuine understanding.
