The most basic form of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The Resuscitation Council (UK) recommend that the sequence of BLS should be:[1]

  1. Ensure safety.
  2. Ascertain if patient is unresponsive.
    • If so, shout for help.
  3. Open airway.
  4. Is patient breathing?
    • If not, call 999 (leaving scene if alone)
  5. 30 chest compressions.
  6. 2 breaths (from 2 attempts).
  7. Continue at a 30:2 ratio until patient starts breathing, help arrives or fatigue sets in.
