Cardiac rhythm characterised by a normal beat alternating with an abnormal beat, most commonly a premature ventricular complex, but can apply to premature atrial complexes as well.
The clinical significance depends on the patient and the context. In young healthy patients, it is of no real significance, whereas it may indicate underlying heart disease and carries an increased risk of sudden death.
