blastós (βλαστός) Greek - germ, sprout, kýstis (κύστις) -bag, pouch, capsule

The blastocyst forms about 5 days after fertilisation of the egg in man. It has an inner cell mass (ICM) which subsequently forms the embryo and an outer layer of cells called the trophoblast surrounding the inner cell mass and a fluid-filled cavity called the blastocoele.
