Blood dyscrasia

A blood dyscrasia is any abnormality of the blood, but generally refers to abnormalities in the production of blood cell components;
Common examples are:
- All normal cells depleted - Pancytopenia
- Erythrocytes - Anaemia
- Leucocytes - Leucopenia or as applied to neutrophils, neutropenia
- Platelets - Thrombocytopenia
Causes can be many such as
- Deficiencies in essential nutrients:
- Iron deficiency
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Folate deficiency
- Deficiencies in maturation
- Drug side-effects
- Myelodysplasia
- Toxicity from chemicals or radiation
- Chronic disease
- Bone marrow replacement
- Malignancy
- Leukaemia
