Blood volume can be measured or estimated, [1] but for practical purposes is usually looked up in a table.

The two most difficult areas are estimating children's proper circulating volume, as the relation of it to weight varies during growth, and estimating the volume of blood loss to decide on replacement.

  • Children: complex
  • Adult: 70ml/kg
  • Very obese: non-linear

Blood loss may be revealed - on the floor or scenery - or concealed. Concealed blood loss (occult) can be dramatically large, difficult to determine and lead to sudden collapse or gradual failure.
