Bowel obstruction refers to mechanical blockage of the bowel and the resulting signs and symptoms that ensue. This is often classsified into the area of the primary blockage:

• Small bowel obstruction
• Large bowel obstruction

Conditions that can mimic bowel obstruction include:

• Pseudo-obstruction
• Ileus
