Bridge to transplantation
From Ganfyd
Introduction
Bridge to transplantation is currently the commonest indication for the use of medium to long term mechanical circulatory support. It refers to the use of ventricular assist devices to support the circulation of patients with end-stage heart failure while they are waiting for a donor organ to become available for heart transplantation. In the UK government funding is limited to 35 devices per year [1]. Device manufacturers also sponsor studies allowing more devices to be implanted.
