CVA or "Cerebro-Vascular Accident" is jargon for stroke. Some consider this term to be inaccurate and unhelpful as it:

• does not convey the severity of the disease (cf. 'heart attack' is a cardio-vascular accident)
• implies that stroke disease is 'accidental' - while many of the risk factors for stroke disease are treatable and can even be self inflicted (eg cocaine abuse).
