The IGHMBP2 gene at 11q13.2-q13.4 codes for the 993 amino acid pre-cursor to DNA-binding protein SMUBP-2. This is a transcription regulator and is a 5' to 3' helicase that unwinds RNA and DNA duplices with an ATP-dependent reaction. Mutations cause HMN6, a subtype of distal hereditary motor neuronopathy.
