The carotid body is a small reddish brown structure posterior to the bifurcation of the common carotid artery. It functions as a chemoreceptor leading to a rise in blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory movements if there is
- excess carbon dioxide
- reduced oxygen tension
It is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve.
