A subclass, the adenosine A(1) receptor antagonists are in development for heart failure. The A2A adenosine receptors have a role in memory.It is also known that their stimulation prevents uncontrolled tissue destruction by overactive immune responses and autoimmunity in animal models so antagonism may not be a good thing. Adenosine is an endogenous anticonvulsant and antiarrhythmic.
