General Surgery broadly encompasses a number of increasingly diverging surgical sub-specialties, unified mostly by their traditional responsibility for managing acute abdominal emergencies and other common surgical problems. More obviously, the gastrointestinal-related sub-specialties come under General surgery, but several other non-GI sub-specialties also fall under the broad umbrella of General Surgery.
