In the anatomical sense, otherwise a slang term for cannabis.

The articulation between two bones is known as a joint. There are many in the body of varying types. Inflammation of a joint is known as arthritis, disease of a joint as arthropathy. Although many disease processes affect joints the two important type are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Types of joint

Synovial joints are bearings with synovium.

• They may form hinges, saddles, ball and sockets.

Fibrous joints tie bones together with little movement.

Cartilaginous joints provide rather more spring.

Examination of a joint

Specific joints require specific manouvres but in general the adage:

• Look
• Feel
• Move

should be applied to systematise any examination.

Treatments

Depending on the nature of the problem joints can be injected. Certain large joints are also amenable to Arthroscopy.
