Disorders, usually acquired in the haemopoetic pathway. The term was coined by William Dameshek in 1951[1].

The term myeloproliferative neoplasms is used where this proliferation of one of the haematopoietic cell lineages. In this context, the abnormal haematopoiesis is frequently qualitatively normal, so that there is 'effective' production of functioning cells that are released into the bloodstream, detectable by full blood counts or peripheral blood smears.
