Introduction

Surgery on the bones and musculoskeletal system, most commonly of the limbs. As with all branches of surgery, there is both elective and emergency work. Although most general orthopaedic surgeons are competent in managing common emergency orthopaedic injuries, sub-specialisation to particular regions of the body or particular types of surgery is common in elective work:

Fractures as a result of trauma make up a significant workload. In the Western population, the common fractures needing admission include fracture neck of femur and the various fractures of the distal forearm.
