Trauma is mechanical damage to the organism. Minor trauma may be dealt with by first aid or attendence at an Accident and Emergency Department. More serious trauma such as significant burns, blunt or penetrating injury may require physiological support (eg resuscitation-not necessarily cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which has a more specific meaning),intensive care and surgery. Polytrauma refers to multiple major injuries. There is a speciality of trauma surgery but all surgical specialities can be involved in managing trauma.
