What are toponyms?

OK, let me guess: a toponym is a name given after a place (e.g. where a disease was first reported)?

Wikipedia doesn't seem to agree - are we using the word correctly here? --Penglish 09:48, 16 July 2007 (BST)

My aunt is a noted toponymist (or toponomist), which left me with considerable exposure to that sort of thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Gelling . Looking at the WP article on toponymy, it includes "In ethnology, a toponym is a name derived from a place or a region" which is a statement I'd agree with (WP contains many I wouldn't). I don't think there is a better description of the disease names of the class into which Lyme disease falls. Candidates? Midgley 10:17, 16 July 2007 (BST)
