Catharanthus roseus

Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle, Vinca rosea, Ammocallis rosea, Lochnera rosea, Cape periwinkle, Rose periwinkle, Rosy periwinkle, Old-maid) is a pretty plant native to Madagascar that produces some useful plant vinca alkaloids such as vinblastine. Crude extracts are hallucinogenic, hypotensive, sedative or tranquilising as well as having anti cancer properties and have been used to treat muscle pain, depression and wasp stings. The plant is both ornamentally and commercially grown.
