Sometimes referred to as a HIDA scan.
The radioactive tracer is injected intravenously. It is normally taken up by the liver and excreted into the bile, filling the gall bladder and outlining the biliary tree.
Other similar chemical compounds used include HIDA (hydroxy-imino-diacetic acid) and diisopropyl iminodiacetic acid.
In neonates, it is used to diagnose biliary atresia.
