Colostomy

A hole in the colon, though usually refers to an iatrogenically created stoma formed from a loop or end limb of colon brought out on through the anterior abdominal wall. Colostomy are often formed from descending colon
Indications
- Defunctioning colostomy where:
- No anorectum (e.g. abdomino-perineal resection)
- Anorectal disease (e.g. severe sepsis or diverticulitis)
- Protection of an 'at risk' anastomosis
- Temporary diversion of faecal stream where primary anastomosis not possible (e.g. Hartmann's procedure)
- Intractable incontinence
