Colostomy

A hole in the colon, though usually refers to an iatrogenically created stoma formed from a loop or end limb of colon brought out on through the anterior abdominal wall. Colostomy are often formed from descending colon

Indications

  • Defunctioning colostomy where:
    • No anorectum (e.g. abdomino-perineal resection)
    • Anorectal disease (e.g. severe sepsis or diverticulitis)
    • Protection of an 'at risk' anastomosis
    • Temporary diversion of faecal stream where primary anastomosis not possible (e.g. Hartmann's procedure)
  • Intractable incontinence
