Analysis of a trial published in JAMA this year 2005 suggests that several features help predict the duration, starting from an average of about 20 days:-

Factor ..............................Extension
Duration before consulting:  0.1 days per day
Severity:    0.66 days longer for each point on a 1-7 scale
Restriction of activities on day of consultation: 0.8 days
