Congenital sensorineural hearing loss has a incidence of about 1/1000. It is very important to screen for as early intervention can result in much better outcome[1][2]. Some causes are:

Occasionally congenital deafness could be due to brain maldevelopment, but more usually if untreated it results in cortical reorganisation[5]. Congential amusia (tone deafness) is associated with abnormalities of the right inferior frontal gyrus [6]
