Damage control

Damage Control is a surgical concept used in treatment of polytrauma. Historically, patients were either stabilised on ICU without any surgical intervention, or taken directly to theatre for prolonged definitive surgical treatment. In the 1980s and 1990s it became increasingly clear that there was a benefit to morbidity and mortality by performing an initial 'stabilisation' procedure to prevent immediate haemorrhage or deterioration, with patients being taken back to theatre once cardiovascularly stable for definitive treatment.
