Tumour consisting of tissue that resembles fibrous scar tissue and thought to derive from the myofibroblast. Sometimes referred to as deep fibromatosis or aggressive fibromatosis.

Despite its benign histological appearence, it can infiltrate into local structures and in some cases may demonstrate quite aggressive behaviour. It does not metastasize, but if not excised adequately, it is prone to recurrence.

Intra-abdominal desmoid tumours are a feature of 10-15% of cases of Familial adenomatous polyposis. The disease process is associated with mutations in the APC gene.
