Differentiation syndrome (leukocyte activation syndrome, APL differentiation syndrome) is characterised by:
  • Fever
  • Dyspnoea
  • Weight gain
  • Pulmonary infiltrates
  • Pleural or pericardial effusions
  • With or without leukocytosis

It is reduced by systematic prednisone prophylaxis. High dose steroids at first sign of syndrome may improve matters. It can be fatal.
