The DALY (disability-adjusted life-year) for a health care intervention can be used in cost-effectiveness analysis. International data is now widely available. In England and Wales the QALY is preferred based on quality of life measures to compare across diseases, but for some diseases, disability might a markedly different individual and societal impact than quality of life measures as for example determined by the EQ-5D measures often used in the UK.
