The upper, outer layer of skin. As the name implies, it overlies the dermis. It is composed of several different cell types, including:
There are several layers visible histologically:
- Stratum basale
- Basal layer (where the cells for the replacement by mitosis of damaged squames are located)
- Stratum spinosum
- Prickle cell layer
- Stratum granulosum
- (Stratum lucidum)
- Stratum corneum
- Horny layer
