Extrinsic initiation depends upon tissue factor activating factor VII on cell membranes which activates factor X. This process is better described as the coagulation and fibrinolysis pathway or network than the extrinsic pathway as this is a bit of an oversimplification based on the prothrombin time as a way of evaluating its function.
