The eye is the sensory organ of sight. Having paired eyes confers binocular vision, which allows the perception of distance and depth.

Human eyes can perceive shape, form, colour, movement, shadow and many subtle variations of the above. The eyes are innervated by the optic nerve (cranial II), which conveys sensory impulses from the retina along the visual pathway to the visual cortex in the occipital lobes of the brain.

Light entering the eye is focused by the lens onto the retina.

The retina has two main types of sensory cells: rods and cones. The latter cell type allows perception of colour.

The medical specialty which concerns diseases of the eye is ophthalmology.
