Introduction
Heterodimer of glycoprotein hormones alpha chain and follitropin subunit beta. Levels are raised in primary gonadal failure and after menopause.
Clinical Use
Diagnosis of gonadal failure and treatment of infertility
Indications
- Anovulation (including polycystic ovary syndrome) in women unresponsive to clomiphene.
- Stimulated in vitro fertilisation (IVF), gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote intra-fallopian transfer (ZIFT).
- In association with a luteinizing hormone (LH) preparation (eg follitropin alfa/lutropin alfa for stimulation of follicular development in women with severe LH and FSH deficiency.
- Stimulation of spermatogenesis in men who have congenital or acquired hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism with concomitant human chorionic gonadotrophin .
Administration
IV as 87 µgrams delivering 77 µgrams, equivalent to 1050 IU
