Painless urinary retention in young females with associated electromyographic abnormalities of the external urethral sphincter.[1][2] 40% of cases have polycystic ovarian syndrome. It sometimes conflated with other causes of urinary retention with no apparent cause.

Treatment may ultimately require intermittent self-catheterisation or sacral nerve stimulation/neuromodulation.
