Gegenhalten

Gegenhalten is the German medical term for paratonia which is muscle hypertonia with an involuntary variable resistance during passive movement. The patient shows active resistance to passive movement of the limbs that does not appear to be under voluntary control. It is a frontal lobe sign to be distinguished from clasp-knife phenomenon and cogwheel rigidity.
