A medical discipline specializing in dealing with undifferentiated presentations accessible directly by the public. The undifferentiated presentations are triaged as; trivial or self limiting illness requiring minimal if any medical input, those illnesses which can be managed by the GP and the primary care team, and those which require specialist or secondary care.

The GP will have been through rigorous hospital training for at least four years and an attachment at one or more General Practices. Many GPs will have a degree of subspecialisms for example dermatology, diabetes or rheumatology.

GPs are in the position where they can view illnesses as a process not a single distinct event or entity.

The core business of General Practice is dealing with those who are, or believe themselves to be, ill.
