Blood in the pleural space. Most commonly due to trauma. Sufficiently large haemothoraces reduce lung expansion and may lead to respiratory compromise. Treatment is by insertion of a chest drain of sufficient calibre to prevent blockage by clot.

As blood is more viscous and may clot, the meniscus may be uneven compared to pleural effusions from just fluid.
