Albumin is a 67kDa protein produced by the liver, it functions as a transport protein and also contributes to blood oncotic pressure. It is the most abundant protein in the blood, comprising 35-45% of plasma protein mass.
Clinical Relevance
- Reduced in liver disease, catabolic states and malnutrition. Detectable in urine in kidney disease.
- There is no advantage in ITU undertaking fluid resuscitation with 4% albumin compared to normal saline. Specifically severe traumatic brain injury appears to be associated with a poorer outcome if 4% albumin is used compared to saline[1].
