Ian Paterson qualified as a breast surgeon and practised in Birmingham. The GMC suspended his registration on 29 October 2012 and referred the case for further police assessment. He was convicted on 17 charges of wounding with intent in 2017 as a result of undertaking needless operations in his private practice between 1997 and 2011. Concerns were first formally raised in June 2007, and the NHS for whom he had also worked published in December 2013, a review of the way that it responded to concerns over his surgical practices[1]. Up to this conviction the NHS had settled 256 cases where his care had been involved at a total cost of £17.7 million. Private settlements are complicated by the healthcare provider who provided facilities[2] and medical defence organisation denying liability and this will have to be tested.
