Introduction

Imipenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic. It has therapeutic activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria (not MRSA). It also has activity against anaerobic bacteria.

Resistance is increasingly common as use of carbapenem antibiotics increase. One mechanism of resistance is through the acquisition by bacteria of carbapenemases via transfer or resistance genes between and within bacterial species.

Administration

Oral

IV Imipenem is available for intravenous administration as a combination product of imipenem monohydrate and cilastatin sodium , the later component being an inhibitor of dehydropeptidase( eg Primaxin®, Tienam®, Zienam®, Cilanem®, Prepenem®).
