Inflammatory diseases often end in the suffix –itis or –ιτις in Greek, where it meant diseased in a general sense.

The classical signs or components of inflammation are:

  • calor (heat)
  • dolor (pain)
  • rubor (redness)
  • tumor (swelling)
  • (Sometimes functio laesa (loss of function) is added to this list).

(There is an excellent microbiology blog called Calor, Dolor, Rubor, Tumor, named after the classic features of inflammation)

In acute inflammation, there is a prompt response to injury, inflammation or infection. Features include:

  • vasodilatation
  • increased capillary permeability
  • leucocyte migration

chronic inflammation.
