A subtype of the influenza virus.

  • Can cause influenza pandemics
  • Coded proteins are (Numbered according to RNA segment):
    1. PB-2: cap binding subunit, polymerase, virulence determinant
    2. PB-1: catalytic subunit of RNA polymerase
    3. PA subunit of viral RNA polymerase
    4. Haemagglutinin (HA): receptor binding
      • Fifteen subtypes (H1–H15)
      • Only H1, H2, and H3 have resulted in stable human to human transmission recently
      • Infections with subtypes H7 (duck) and chicken H5 and H9 haemagglutinins have resulted in isolated severe human illness
    5. NP: Nucleoprotein
    6. Neuraminidase (NA): helps release of new virus from infected cells
      • Nine neuraminidase subtypes (N1–N9)
        • Only N1 and N2 have resulted in stable human to human transmission recently
    7. Codes for both:
      • M1: matrix protein that interacts with genome and the nuclear export factor, assisting in viral assembly
      • M2: tetrameric ion channel, that controls pH in Golgi during haemagglutinin synthesis and in virion uncoating
    8. Non-structural (NS)
      • NS1: post-transcription RNA control and an interferon antagonist
      • NEP: involved in nuclear export of viral RNA and viral assembly
