Heterotopic gastric mucosa at the (cervical) inlet of the oesophagus. It is unusual, with an incidence of <1%, though it may be easily miss with rapid endoscopy. Endoscopically, it has a pink, velvety appearence in distinction to the pale-coloured, squamous-lined oesophagus. The heterotopic gastric mucosa is susceptible to the same conditions as normal gastric mucosa such as Helicobacter pylori infection,[1] peptic ulceration,[2] intestinal metaplasia and malignancy.[3] In at least one series, inlet patch is associated with oesophagitis and Barrett's oesophagus (at the conventional distal oesophagus).[4]
