Intensity modulated radiation therapy
A method of delivering radiotherapy, representing an advance on 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy. The same concept of conformal radiotherapy is retained in that the shape of the beam can be collimated (shuttered) to match the irregular shape of a tumour. However, instead of a a beam of radiation of uniform intensity, the part of the beam destined for a larger volume of tumour is correspondingly more intense. The advantage of the technique is more targetted destruction of tissue and less toxicity to adjacent healthy tissue.
