Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 is a 532 amino acid pro-peptide coded by the ICAM1 gene at 19p13.3-p13.2. It is processed to a membrane bound homodimer that is a ligand to the integrins lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 and Mac-1 as well as having interactions with mucin-1 and promoting cell aggregation in epithelial cells. It is a cellular receptor for rhinovirus and coxsackievirus. Binding is associated with an increased risk for cerebral malaria[1]. The secreted molecule, soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1), has serum levels that relate to clinical activity in Graves disease[2] and may have prognostic significance in diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and malaria[3].
