The IL6ST gene codes for the ubiquitous 918 amino-acid interleukin-6 receptor subunit beta. Three isoforms are produced by alternative splicing. Isoform 2 is also known as GP130-RAPS. This is an important signal-transducing molecule as binding of IL-6 to the interleukin-6 receptor induces interleukin-6 receptor subunit beta homodimerization and formation of a high-affinity receptor complex, which activates Janus kinases. This causes phosphorylation of interleukin-6 receptor subunit beta tyrosine residues which in turn activates STAT3. Its essential roles include in regulation of the immune response, hematopoiesis, pain control, neurons, bone metabolism and embryonic development
