The first International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for the Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) took place in 1990 and started a formal process of harmonisation in medicines approval between the EU, USA and Japan with WHO and Canada as initial observers. Effectively most of the world has had to adopt the standards developed for new medicinal products marketed internationally.
